Now here's a Raimi film I can get behind.
Watching this film is delightful for several reasons: you can sense a certain hunger in the film, a feeling that the filmmakers just wanted to make a great movie, and they succeeded. Also, the angles and camera movements are incredibly inventive and compliment the maniacal feel of the film, and really add to the atmosphere and overal insanity. Furthermore, its incredibly gory, and that's always fun - especially when most of the effects used hold up pretty well even 24 years later.
Watching this film, you also get to see the creation of a true legend - Bruce Campbell. The guy is teriffic in nearly everything he's in, even when the rest of the movie is a travesty, but he's never better than he is in the Evil Dead films. I'm glad Ted Raimi has put to rest rumors that there was an Evil Dead remake in the works, because honestly, nobody can play Ash but Bruce.
Financed completely by soliciation by the filmmakers, this movie is simply a landmark in independent, do-it-yourself cinema, and it has reached it's legendary status for a reason.
This movie is incredibly important, if for no other reason than it gave us Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness.
