1994 was a terrific year for movies. This movie is fantastic. It's so bold in exploring the two girls, and that alone deserves a lot of praise. It doesn't pander, it simply contemplates their feelings and their situations. It may have some homosexual undertones, but if that stops you from empathizing just a little bit with the situation the girls are in, you aren't human. They obviously were a little crazed, and not to be taken lightly, but they are facsinating characters. The lead actresses, Kate Winslet in particular, do an incredible job of portraying them. The rest of the performances are excellent as well.
The cinematography was amazing as well. I loved the way the film was shot, the surreal flourishes it was given, the transformation of the landscapes and all of the special effects. It's a visual treat of the highest order. I think this may be Peter Jackson's best movie.
